The Asscher is the square member of the step-cut family, developed in 1902 and closely associated with Art Deco design. Its cropped corners give an octagonal outline, and its deeper pavilion and higher crown produce a distinctive effect sometimes called the endless staircase — concentric squares of light receding into the centre of the stone.
Like the emerald cut it is a step cut, so clarity and colour are more exposed than in any brilliant shape and are worth weighting accordingly. It is also one of the most symmetrical shapes available, which means setting matters: a slightly off-centre Asscher is obvious where an off-centre cushion is not. The geometry suits plain bands, milgrain detail and trilogy settings with baguette or trapezoid sides.
