Drops are the only earring style with deliberate movement, and that movement is the point — a drop catches light continuously as the head turns, where a stud only reflects what reaches it from a fixed angle. The articulation between the post and the drop is what produces it, so the joint matters as much as the stones.
Length is the fitting decision. A drop ending above the jaw reads as a refined everyday piece; one falling below it reads as occasion jewellery and suits an updo or a high neckline. Longer drops also need a locking or screw back, both for security and because a friction back will let the weight tilt the earring forward over a few hours of wear.
