A pear is a round brilliant at one end and a marquise point at the other, which makes it the most directional shape in the catalogue. Worn with the point toward the fingernail it lengthens the finger; worn the other way it reads as softer and more vintage. Neither is wrong, but the ring has to be sized and set for the orientation you choose.
The point is also the vulnerable part. A pear should always be set with a V-prong or chevron cap over the tip, because that corner concentrates stress and is the first place a stone will chip.
