Studs are the one piece of diamond jewellery judged almost entirely in profile and at conversation distance, which changes what matters. Setting height is the main variable: a martini setting sits low and close to the lobe, a basket setting raises the stone and lets more light in underneath, and the difference is obvious in wear even when the stones are identical.
Three or four prongs is the other decision. Three exposes more of the stone and reads more modern; four holds more securely and frames the stone more traditionally; a bezel protects best and suits anyone who sleeps in their earrings. Because the stone is seen from the front only, depth below the girdle contributes nothing visible, so spread matters more than weight.
