The two things worth matching are height and karat. A band noticeably taller than the engagement ring's shank will create a visible step; a band in a different gold karat will wear at a different rate, since lower karat alloys are harder and can abrade a softer neighbour over years of contact. Rings worn together are best kept to the same karat for that reason.
