A curved or contoured band is shaped to follow the outline of an engagement ring so the two sit flush with no gap. It is the answer to a specific problem: a straight band cannot sit tight against a ring with a low-set centre stone, a halo, or a wide setting, and the resulting gap collects grit and lets both rings rotate.
The curve has to match the ring it is made for, so these are normally chosen with the engagement ring in hand rather than bought independently. Chevron and V-shapes nest against pointed shapes like pear and marquise; shallow arcs suit round and oval halos. A curved band can also be worn alone, where the shape reads as a design feature rather than a solution.
