The princess cut is the most efficient use of the original crystal of any brilliant shape — roughly 80 per cent of the rough is retained, against about 40 per cent for a round. That efficiency is why a princess of a given carat weight is usually the least expensive brilliant-faceted option, and why the shape became the standard modern alternative to the round.
Its four corners are the thing to plan for. They are the thinnest points on the stone and the most likely to chip, so a princess should be set with protective V-prongs or in a bezel rather than with simple round claws. The square outline also reads smaller than its weight suggests, because more of the carat sits in depth below the table than in spread across the top.
