At four carats the engineering matters as much as the stone. A diamond this size is heavy enough to rotate on the finger if the shank is too thin, so these rings are built with wider bands, deeper baskets and often six prongs rather than four. The setting height also has to be judged against how the ring will actually be worn.
Shape changes the result dramatically at this weight. Four carats in an elongated oval or marquise spans far more finger than four carats in a round or princess, where more of the weight sits in depth. Clarity and colour are also less forgiving as size increases, because a larger table gives any inclusion or tint more room to be seen.
