An oval is a modified round brilliant stretched along one axis, so it keeps most of the round's facet pattern and most of its fire while covering noticeably more finger. A one-carat oval typically reads about a tenth of an inch longer than a one-carat round, and the elongation also has a slimming effect on the hand that buyers often notice before they notice the stone.
Two things are worth checking on any oval. The first is the bowtie, a dark band across the centre caused by facets shadowing the eye; every oval has one to some degree and a good cut keeps it faint. The second is the length-to-width ratio, usually between 1.30 and 1.50 — lower looks rounder, higher looks more dramatic. Both are visible in daylight without any equipment.
