Chain length is the decision that determines whether a necklace works, and it is independent of the pendant. A 16-inch chain sits at the base of the throat, 18 inches rests on the collarbone and is the most common choice, 20 to 22 inches falls just below it and suits a higher neckline, and anything longer reads as a layering piece.

Pendant weight and chain gauge have to match. A substantial pendant on a fine cable chain will wear through the bail over time and sits poorly; a heavier curb or rolo chain carries weight better but reads as jewellery in its own right rather than as a setting for the stone. Adjustable chains with a sliding bead solve most of this by allowing two or three lengths in one piece.
