Earrings are judged on matching more than on any single stone. A pair has to agree in colour, clarity and cut, because the two stones are seen together at a fixed distance and any difference between them is immediately legible in a way it never is on a solitaire ring.

Weight is the second consideration and the one most often overlooked. Carat weight on earrings is normally quoted for the pair, not per stone, so a two-carat pair means one carat in each ear. Heavier designs benefit from a screw back or a locking back rather than a friction butterfly, and from a disc back to stop the earring tilting forward in the lobe.
