Colored Diamond Prices in 2026: Natural vs Lab-Grown vs Moissanite (Real Price Data)

Last updated: October 1, 2026 · Prices checked live on claratas.com on October 1, 2026

Quick answer: A colored diamond's price is set mostly by its origin. In our own pricing of the same ring design in 14K gold, a 1 carat moissanite version costs $445, a lab-grown diamond version about $1,150 to $1,530, and a natural diamond version anywhere from $3,915 for yellow to $28,885 for blue. Natural colored diamonds are priced for rarity, lab-grown colored diamonds are real diamonds priced for beauty and size, and moissanite is priced for maximum look at the lowest cost. At Claratas you can choose any of the three on the same design, starting from $325.

Key takeaways

  • Natural costs 3x to 19x more than lab-grown at 1 carat, depending on the color. The gap is smallest for yellow (3.4x) and largest for blue (18.9x).
  • Natural yellow is the best-value natural colored diamond. A 1 carat natural yellow ring costs less than a 1 carat natural pink, blue or green by a wide margin.
  • Size gets expensive fast in natural. Going from 1 to 3 carats multiplies a natural ring's price by about 10x to 13x, but a lab-grown ring's by only about 1.5x.
  • Lab-grown pink, blue and green cost almost the same, so with lab-grown you can choose your color by heart, not by budget.

Our data: the same ring in three origins

To show what origin really does to price, we priced four of our own colored diamond rings on claratas.com, each in 14K solid gold, at 1, 2 and 3 carats total weight (ctw). The design, gold and craftsmanship stay the same. Only the stone changes.

What the numbers tell you

1. Yellow is the color where natural makes the most sense

Natural yellow diamonds are colored by nitrogen, the most common trace element in diamonds, so they are far more available than other natural colors. That is why a 1 carat natural yellow ring is only about 3.4x the lab-grown price, while natural blue is almost 19x. If owning a natural colored diamond matters to you and your budget is in the low thousands, yellow is the place to start.

2. Blue and pink are where lab-grown shines

Natural blue and pink are among the rarest gems on earth. With lab-grown, a vivid blue or pink diamond costs about the same as yellow, so you get the rarest-looking colors for roughly $1,500 at 1 carat.

3. In natural, carat weight is everything

Large natural colored diamonds are exponentially rarer. In our data, a natural pink ring goes from $24,790 at 1 carat to $324,085 at 3 carats, about 13x. The same lab-grown ring goes from $1,510 to $2,305, about 1.5x. If you want a big colored stone, lab-grown or moissanite is the realistic route.

4. Moissanite is the budget champion at every size

Colored moissanite costs the same across colors and stays under about $1,050 even at 3 carats in 14K gold. It is the way to get the biggest colored look for the smallest spend.

Why natural colored diamonds cost so much

Only a tiny share of mined diamonds show strong natural color, often quoted at around 0.1%. Each color needs rare conditions:

  • Yellow: nitrogen atoms in the crystal (the most common).
  • Blue: boron, which is very rare deep in the earth.
  • Pink: intense pressure that distorts the crystal lattice.
  • Green: natural radiation over millions of years.

Supply has also tightened. The Argyle mine in Australia, which produced the large majority of the world's pink diamonds, closed in 2020.

How lab-grown colored diamonds are made

Lab-grown diamonds are grown with HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) or CVD (chemical vapor deposition). Color is created in a controlled way: boron during growth gives blue, nitrogen gives yellow, and pink and green are developed with a carefully controlled post-growth process. The result is a real diamond, chemically, physically and optically the same as a mined diamond, with the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale.

What about colored moissanite?

Moissanite is silicon carbide, not diamond. It is very hard (9.25 on the Mohs scale), very brilliant and shows more rainbow "fire" than diamond. It is ideal if you want a large, colorful stone for everyday wear at the lowest price. Because it is a different gem, its color can look slightly different from a diamond of the same shade in bright sunlight.
