A custom necklace involves two independent choices that are easy to conflate: the pendant or stone arrangement, and the chain that carries it. They can be designed separately, and a chain that suits the pendant's weight matters as much as the stone itself — a heavy pendant on too fine a chain wears at the bail over time.
Length is the other decision to settle early, since it determines where the piece sits and therefore what necklines it works with. Sixteen inches sits at the throat, eighteen on the collarbone, twenty or more below it. An adjustable chain gives two or three positions in one piece. Stones are available as natural diamond, lab-grown diamond or moissanite.
