A bespoke commission is usually driven by one of three things: a shape or setting combination that does not exist ready-made, a stone size that falls between standard offerings, or a piece that has to coordinate with something the wearer already owns. Any of the three is a reasonable starting point, and so is an image of something seen elsewhere.
The practical decisions are the same ones that apply to any piece — shape, carat weight, setting style, gold colour and karat, and whether the stones are natural diamond, lab-grown diamond or moissanite — but taken in whatever order suits the design rather than fixed in advance. Because each piece is made to order, sizing and proportion are set before manufacture rather than altered afterwards.
