An oval is a round brilliant stretched along one axis: the same facet pattern, more finger covered, and a shape that visibly lengthens the hand. Yellow gold emphasizes that. It is the warmest of the three metals, and against warm metal a long stone reads as one continuous line rather than a stone sitting on a band, so a yellow gold oval looks longer than the same ring in white. Karat changes the strength of the color: 9K is paler and harder, 18K a deeper yellow and softer. Warm metal also flatters a stone in the lower color grades, with no cool metal beside it to show up a tint.
