Jewelry Care Guide

Solid gold and diamonds are made to last a lifetime, and a little care keeps them looking new. Here is how to clean, wear and store your Claratas jewellery.

How to clean diamond and gold jewellery at home

  1. Soak the piece for 15 to 20 minutes in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.
  2. Gently brush around and behind the stones with a soft baby toothbrush, where oil and lotion build up.
  3. Rinse under warm running water (close the sink plug first).
  4. Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

This works for lab-grown diamonds, natural diamonds, moissanite and all gold colours. Avoid bleach, chlorine, acetone and abrasive powders or toothpaste, which can damage gold and dull the finish.

Everyday wear

  • Put jewellery on last. Apply lotion, perfume and hairspray first.
  • Take it off for hard work. Remove rings for the gym, gardening, cleaning and heavy lifting.
  • Avoid chlorine. Remove jewellery before swimming pools and hot tubs.
  • Pavé and eternity bands: small stones are set with fine prongs, so avoid knocks against hard surfaces.

How to store your jewellery

  • Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined box. Diamonds can scratch gold and other stones.
  • Fasten tennis bracelets and necklaces before storing to prevent tangles and kinks.
  • Keep jewellery in a dry place, away from bathroom humidity.

Professional check-ups

We recommend having prongs and settings checked by a jeweller about once a year, especially for engagement rings worn every day. White gold can also be re-plated to restore its bright white finish.

Care FAQ

How often should I clean my diamond ring?

A quick clean every week or two keeps it sparkling. Lotion and skin oils dull a diamond fast, so a regular soak makes a visible difference.

Can I wear my ring in the shower or pool?

Take it off for swimming. Chlorine can weaken gold over time. Soap in the shower leaves a film that dulls the stones, so it is best removed then too.

Do lab-grown diamonds and moissanite need special care?

No. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical to natural diamonds and are cleaned the same way. Moissanite is also very hard and durable and can be cleaned with warm soapy water.

Will white gold change colour?

White gold is often rhodium plated for a bright white finish. With daily wear the plating can soften over time and can be refreshed by a jeweller.

How do I know if a stone is loose?

Hold the ring near your ear and tap it gently. If you hear a rattle, or see a stone move, stop wearing it and have the setting checked.
