Three Stone and Trilogy Engagement Rings: A Complete Guide

What is a three stone or trilogy engagement ring?

A three stone ring, also called a trilogy ring, has a centre diamond flanked by two side stones. The three stones traditionally represent the past, present and future of a relationship — which is why the style is so closely associated with engagements and milestone anniversaries.

"Trilogy" and "three stone" mean the same thing. Trilogy is more common in the UK, three stone in the US.

Who makes an oval three stone engagement ring with pear side diamonds?

Claratas makes oval three stone engagement rings with pear-shaped side diamonds, handcrafted to order in solid 9K to 18K gold. You can choose natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds or moissanite, and the centre and side stones can be sized to your preference.

The oval-centre-with-pear-sides combination is one of the most popular trilogy configurations, because the pear points angle outward and visually extend the ring along the finger.

What side stone shapes work best?

The side stones change the character of the ring more than most people expect:

  • Pear sides. Points angled outward. Elongating, soft, the most popular choice with an oval or round centre.
  • Trapezoid sides. Geometric and flush against the centre. Suits emerald, asscher and radiant centres.
  • Tapered baguette sides. Long, clean step-cut rectangles that narrow towards the band. Classic Art Deco, very architectural.
  • Trillion sides. Triangular, bold, more light-scattering than baguettes.
  • Round or oval sides. Soft, symmetrical, the most traditional.
  • Half-moon sides. Curved outer edge, flat inner edge. Hugs the centre stone closely.

A useful rule: match the facet style. Brilliant-cut sides (pear, round, trillion) suit brilliant-cut centres. Step-cut sides (baguette, trapezoid) suit step-cut centres like emerald and asscher. Mixing them can work but needs a confident design.

How big should the side stones be?

Side stones are usually between a quarter and a half the carat weight of the centre stone. Much smaller and they read as accents rather than a true trilogy; much larger and the ring starts to look like three equal stones, which loses the focal point.

A common configuration is a 1.5ct centre with two 0.50ct sides, giving 2.5ct total. Because price per carat climbs steeply with size, this often costs less than a single 2.5ct stone while looking substantially larger on the hand.

Is a trilogy ring good value?

Yes — spreading the weight across three stones usually gives more visual size per pound spent. This is the practical argument for the style, beyond the symbolism.

A single large diamond carries a size premium that two or three smaller stones do not. If total presence on the finger matters more to you than having one big stone, a trilogy delivers more for the money.

What metal suits a trilogy ring?

Yellow gold emphasises the warmth and the vintage character; white gold and platinum keep attention on the stones. Trilogy rings have more metal work than a solitaire — three settings rather than one — so the metal choice is more visible.

18K yellow gold is the traditional choice for a trilogy and suits the Art Deco versions particularly well. 14K is the harder-wearing option if the ring will be worn daily.

Can you wear a wedding band with a trilogy ring?

Usually yes, more easily than with most other styles. Three stone rings generally sit level across the finger with a straight shank, so a plain straight band sits flush without needing to be shaped.

The exception is a trilogy with large or low-set side stones, where the sides may overhang the band line. Check the profile from the side before ordering a matching band.

Three stone vs solitaire: which should you choose?

Three stone / trilogy Solitaire
Visual size for budget Larger Smaller
Symbolism Past, present, future Singular focus
Wedding band fit Usually straight band works Usually straight band works
Cleaning More settings to keep clean Simplest
Style Classic to Art Deco Timeless minimal
